Fire Alarm Design, Installation and Commissioning Explained for Wiltshire Sites - Fire Alarm Services by Affinity Fire & Security

Installing a fire alarm system is a multi-stage process that requires careful planning, technical expertise, and strict adherence to British Standards. For commercial and industrial sites across Wiltshire, understanding each stage of the process helps building owners and managers and project managers set realistic expectations and ensure a smooth installation.

Stage 1: Site Survey and Fire Risk Assessment

Every fire alarm project begins with a thorough site survey. Our engineers visit the Wiltshire premises to assess the building layout, construction type, occupancy patterns, and any specific hazards. This survey, combined with the fire risk assessment, determines the appropriate system category and detection requirements under BS 5839-1. For background on system categories, see our guide to fire alarm categories.

Stage 2: System Design

Based on the survey findings, a detailed system design is produced. This includes:

  • Selection of the appropriate system category (L1, L2, L3, P1, P2, or M)
  • Device layout drawings showing detector, call point, and sounder positions
  • Cable routing and containment plans
  • Control panel specification and location
  • Integration requirements with other building systems such as voice evacuation and smoke ventilation
  • Cause and effect matrix defining how the system responds to different alarm conditions

Stage 3: Installation

The installation phase involves the physical fitting of all fire alarm equipment. Our local engineers work to minimise disruption to building operations, coordinating with other trades where necessary. Installation includes:

  • Cable installation in appropriate containment
  • Mounting and wiring of detectors, call points, and sounders
  • Control panel installation and programming
  • Interface connections to other systems (e.g., door holders, dampers, lifts)

Stage 4: Commissioning

Commissioning is the formal process of verifying that every component of the system operates correctly. Each device is individually tested, cause and effect relationships are verified, and sound pressure levels are measured to confirm adequate warning throughout the building. A commissioning certificate is issued upon successful completion.

Stage 5: Handover and Training

Following commissioning, we provide full handover documentation including as-built drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, and commissioning certificates. On-site training is provided for the responsible person and key staff covering daily operation, weekly testing procedures, and basic fault response.
